Getting your Maryland medical marijuana certification is simple. Though the registration process may sound complicated, the overall process involves only 3 steps.

STEP 1 – Register with Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission

Registration? What is that for? Do I have to pay for it? Where can I do that?

Relax and take a deep breath. MMCC or Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission needs all patients who wants to be in the medical marijuana program to register as a patient for them to assign you your MMCC ID number. This is your unique 16-digit patient ID number that you need to provide us, a medical marijuana doctor, along with the copy of your medical records so we can complete your certification. Once you are certified, you’ll use this MMCC ID number to visit the dispensaries.

There is no cost to register and it is absolutely free.

Below are the important points to remember to prevent delays on processing your registration application:

  1. Register as a PATIENT if you are not a caregiver of an underage patient or a patient who needs a caregiver.

  2. Ensure that the photo meets the requirements as this is the most common reason for repeating the application process. Below is the guidelines from MMCC:

Generally, the photo should look like a driver’s license or passport photo. Specifically, it must be a clear, color photo of the patient’s unobscured face taken within the last six months to reflect the patient’s current appearance and feature a plain white or off-white background. The patient must be clothed, directly facing the camera with both eyes open and should have either a neutral facial expression or a natural smile.
The file must be an image file (.jpg, .png or .gif)
no larger than 3 MB in size and may not be digitally enhanced or altered in a way that changes the patient’s appearance.

As soon as you have completed and submitted an online application form, a verification email will be sent to the email address you provided on your application. You must click the verification link in the email message to verify your email account. Without performing this step, your application is not complete and will not be reviewed by the Commission.

Completed applications will be reviewed by MMCC and you will receive a follow up email advising whether or not your application has been approved. Please retain the approval email for your records. It contains your Username, which you will need to log in to the Patient Registry, as well as your MMCC Patient ID Number, which your physician will need to issue your written certification for medical cannabis. Once you have a written certification, you will also need to provide your Patient ID Number when visiting a licensed dispensary to purchase medical cannabis.

After receiving MMCC approval, you are ready to visit a marijuana doctor registered with MMCC to obtain a valid certification.

Once you are certified, you are ready for the 3rd step.

STEP 3 – Visit a dispensary

Dispensaries have their own pharmacist that can help you discuss the medications they have available at their site. Just provide your MMCC ID number and they can verify if you have a valid certification from a licensed cannabis doctor in the state.

Your certification is only valid within Maryland. DC is not dispensing medical cannabis to any Maryland resident and it is a violation of Federal law to travel across state lines with cannabis.

The physical medical marijuana ID card is optional. It is not required for Maryland patients as you only need to bring your MMCC ID number when you go to the dispensaries. If you prefer to have the actual medical cannabis card, you may purchase it directly from MMCC for a fee of $50 once your are certified. Alternatively, you can print out a copy of your certificate when you log in to your MMCC account.
